https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiuncrOvWlI
SpoilerOne of the nastier characteristics of the Tomcat is that at approach Angle of Attack (10.6deg), the aircraft exhibits and undamped dutch roll tendency. This means that the DR will oscillate indefinitely without corrective input from the pilot. At AoA's greater than 10.6, the DR response is underdamped, which means that it will get worse without pilot input. The yaw response to slip angle (weathervane), decreases almost linearly from 10 degrees AoA and directional stability goes negative above 17 degrees. (Side note) This presents an interesting problem during maneuvers, because while main wings do 'stall' according to the strict definition of boundary layer separation leading to the dissociation of the drag dependence on lift slope; the pancake between the engines generates a newtonian lift effect that products a maximum lift coefficient at 35 degrees AoA.
To quote our most experienced Tomcat pilot (and I hope he doesn't mind)
"It was "terrifyingly beautiful to fly." The same could be said for the early Tomcat. If things were going well and your head is in the game, you were in for a treat, but if things are going pear shaped Iand your head is full of snot, then you better get your head back in the game quickly, or you will find out how unforgiving the jet can be."
SpoilerThe biggest balance we've struggled with on the F-14 is getting the Tomcat to depart properly at slow speeds (approach) and at high speeds. When inverted at the top of a loop, the F-14 is a very stable airframe and can be pushed to >40deg AoA without serious cause for concern; but if you hit 25deg AoA on approach....you're in a heap of trouble. There is no real way to (that I know of) to implement both of those characteristics in the same airfile.
FSX allows you to assign departing moments, but they are proportional to the rate of angle of attack; i.e. the faster AoA is increasing, the greater the departing moment. At approach, departure is typically slow, so you need fairly large moments to get a reasonable response. However, the rates of AoA are very high with high speed (combat) maneuvers. So moments that produce good approach response are waaay too aggressive in maneuvers. So some sort of a balance has to be reached. What will likely happen is the A model Tomcat with be a little more authentic in approach and the B model will be a little more authentic in maneuvers.

Not yet ;)
