feet in front of me. It looks as though an aircraft may have been hit. To designate the
position, I hit the Mark button on my up-front control. This stores the coordinates of
my present position. If AWACS calls and needs a reference point, I can call up the coordinates
and pass them along.
I accelerate to 300 knots and continue climbing. The radios are saturated, and I'm still
getting launch indications on my RWR scope. Most pilots have lost sight of their wingmen,
including me. I have no idea where Harpo is or if he's even alive. Passing 26,000
feet, though, I finally hear his voice.
"Collar 16, posit!" Harpo barks out.
"Collar 16 is blind," I reply. "I'm on the three-two-zero for one-four off of egress."
"Copy that," Harpo answers. "I'm three miles on your nose."

I start on time with the rest of the Vipers on the ramp. Once the engine is up to speed,
I complete my PRI/SEC and EPU checks. I turn on my systems and download my DTC
information into the aircraft's computers. As soon as I finish punching in my INS coordinates,
I load the Have Quick frequencies into my radio. While the INS aligns, I test my
flight-control, brake, and air-refueling systems. Afterward, I clear my crew chief off the
headset. While he stands at parade rest in front of the aircraft, I check each of the
twenty-one steerpoints to ensure they're correct. The only point I have to input is my
target. Reaching toward the up-front control, I call up steerpoint ten and enter the coordinates:
N3300.483 E04413.083 with an elevation of 114 feet.
When I finish, I call up my air-to-ground bombing mode and check the bombing
profiles. Profile one calls for a CCRP delivery. If I decide to switch to CCIP, all I have to
do is hit the missile step button on the stick. The MK-84 fuse setting is Nose and the
arming delay is 6.82 seconds. I'll be dropping singles versus pairs, so two release pulses
are programmed. A check of the intervalometer setting shows .280 milliseconds, which
will space the bombs seventy-five feet apart at impact. Profile two has the same numbers
as profile one. But instead of CCRP, the profile two mode is set up to drop manually. In
the event of a system malfunction, all I have to do is call up profile two, hit the pickle
button, and the bombs will come off.
